Never head up to Sierra Nevada without being prepared for snow. The Guardia Civil may require the use of chains or snow socks from a certain point of the climb, whenever conditions demand it.
The Basic Car Survival Kit
Always try to carry metal chains or textile snow socks in the trunk if there is a snow warning.
Having a hand shovel in the car never hurts. It will be your best ally if you need to clear snow from around the wheels to gain traction and get out of a tight spot.
What to do if you get stuck?
Even with chains on, the snow can play tricks on you and leave you momentarily stuck. Stay calm. Follow these expert tips to resolve the situation quickly and safely:
1. Wait for the Snowplow
If you get stuck, do not force the car unnecessarily. Wait patiently for the resort's snowplow to pass. They are the masters of the road in those moments.
2. Take Advantage of the "Slipstream"
Once the snowplow has passed, get immediately behind it (maintaining a safe distance). This way, you will take advantage of the newly cleared lane and ensure a clean route with grip to continue your ascent.
3. Look for Roadside Assistance
On days with heavy storms, there are usually staff from the resort driving around, and they try to help drivers who may have become stuck.
Precaution and proper equipment are your best guarantee. Do not underestimate mountain conditions and always check the road status before leaving. Enjoy the snow safely!
